ENGROSSING

of legislation

 

 

Amended legislation is created following strict engrossing methodology and rules.

 

Engrossing refers to the process of amending the text of legislation by following the instructions contained in amending legislation. This is not the same as editing, which generally refers to the preparation of written material for publication or presentation, by correcting, revising, or adapting that material.

 

The objective behind LegalB's Legislation Database is to produce amended legislative texts true to the legislature’s engrossing instructions contained in amending texts. The objective is not to produce amended texts that are true to the intention of the legislature: That is the work of editors, not engrossers.

 

This has required the development of highly regularized, proprietary, engrossing methodology to engross amended texts true to the legislature’s instructions. Further, where errors in engrossing instructions are so serious that that engrossing objective cannot be achieved, this is recorded and the substantive issuesform part of LegalB;s Commentary on legislation, and we refer reader of such engrossed legislation to that Commentary.
